Massage Therapy

What is Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body in order to promote or maintain good health. Among some of the benefits of massage is reduced pain, stress and anxiety, increased range of motion and the prevention of further injury.

In Ontario, massage therapy is a regulated profession, much like physiotherapy or nursing. Students must complete 150 clinical hours with a recognized massage school and go through the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario's rigorous testing before calling themselves "massage therapists" or "registered massage therapists" and have studied extensively in the areas of anatomy, physiology, pathology, ethics and even pharmacology.

The practice of massage is ancient, with the earliest references being found in 4000 year old Chinese texts. One must assume however, that the practice is older yet. Even other primate species will instinctively rub the site of pain, just like we do when pinched or struck.

What to expect during your visit

While massage is safe for most people, there are precautions to be taken in the case of certain medical conditions. It is therefore necessary for clients to fill out a brief health history form on their first visit. A physical assessment based on the clients needs will then guide the therapist as to how to proceed. After the assessment, your therapist will let you know what areas should be treated, what articles of clothing to remove (based on your comfort level) and how to install yourself on the table. Sessions usually last between 30 to 90 minutes depending on the specific needs of the client.

Massage Therapists have many tools in their toolbox and employ a wide variety of techniques using different strokes including general rubbing, rocking motions, more specific trigger point work and postural re-education. Some conditions require more aggressive techniques and can be painful, but rarely is the pain outside of what a client can comfortably handle.
